Responsibilities:
Maintain patient advocacy by providing patients and family members regarding their rights and responsibilities and liaising with family members.
Coordinate and evaluate patient safety in a busy surgical unit.
Liaise with all members of the multi-disciplinary team of health professionals to ensure appropriate and optimal levels of communication are met
Co-ordinate and lead the provision of care across a continuum appropriate for patient mix, including high acuity post-surgical patients.
Troubleshoot clinical problems as they arise as per best practice.
Ensure clinical practice is consistent with AHPRA requirements, hospital policies and best practice guidelines.
Review of clinical pathways are implemented to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
Roster, allocate and delegate to ensure safe clinical service delivery.
Attendance or appropriate delegation of staff to attend the following committees and meetings, including bed management, heads of department, clinical services, surgical services, surgical morbidity and mortality, workplace health and safety, infection control, quality, infection control, wound care
Daily management of staff allocation, patient transfers, doctors rounds.
In charge of the co-ordination of medical emergencies for the unit.
Implementation and management of equipment, disposables, therapeutics & pharmacy
Responsible for annual performance reviews and performance management of staff
Attend to patient complaints with thorough documentation and review as appropriate
Skills and Experience required:
Registered Nurse with minimum 5 years acute hospital experience
Excellent communication, problem solving and HR abilities
An understanding of human resource management practices
Knowledge related to legislation and policy that governs nursing practice and contemporary nursing issues
An ability to act as an effective role model in the area of clinical practice
Computer literacy
Pre-requisites:
Current AHPRA registration
3-5 years recent healthcare management experience
Broad demonstrated knowledge and abilities of general surgical pre and post care
Performance management and mentoring experience
Knowledge related to legislation and policy that governs nursing practice and contemporary nursing issues

Highly desirable: Previous experience as a Nurse Unit Manager with Post graduate university qualifications
