Computer Whiz – Canberra is a locally owned and operated business servicing the Canberra community since 2010. Originally servicing mainly residential customers, it has since grown to service small and medium-sized businesses in the local area.

The business is run by Derek Gillett who has worked in the I.T. field since 1995 in a range of areas including database development, web development, and as a consultant on large commercial ERP systems. He has also worked as a field technician in this business and a similar business in Brisbane helping hundreds of customers with a wide range of issues from malware removal, email configuration, network setup and maintenance, backup configuration, website hosting and development, and new system builds.

Automated monitoring of key infrastructure

Monitoring of key I.T. infrastructure to ensure stability is vital to the smooth operation of a business. Performing this monitoring work manually however, is impractical as the labor cost would make it unfeasible, yet the work is essential.

For this reason, many tools now exist to automate this process, checking many facets of a computer network automatically many times a day.

The types of checking that can be performed include:

• Website uptime – where the status of a website is checked regularly to ensure it is still available to the public

• Website changes – which checks that a website has not changed since it was last checked. An unexpected change to a website could indicate that the site has been compromised by malicious software

• Desktop and Server health – where numerous checks are performed on a device to ensure it is operating correctly. Checks can include disk space, disk health, currency of antivirus software and patches, memory usage, and online state.

Backup configuration

Backup is an essential piece of any business-critical network infrastructure. Two types of backup exist – device-level snapshot backups, where a backup is taken of the entire operating system, and file-level backups, where individual files and folders are backed up.

Further, there should be monitoring of the health of the backup system and automatic notifications should be sent regularly advising users of the status of the backup system.
